A 23 -strong Indian trade team, led by Tourism Minister Subodh Kant Sahay, is now on a 10-day, three nation tour of South East Asia. The trip aims to promote inbound tourism to India from these nations and highlight the look East policy in tourism which seeks to emphasise India’s ties with the East, rather than the traditional West.Sahay and the team of officials, agents and operators are travelling to Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia, where roadshows and technical aspects of tourism promotion are to take place.Significantly, senior Indian Association of Tour Operators members, including Senior Vice President Arjun Sharma, Managing Director of Le Passage to India, are part of the team. Nearly a dozen IATO members have decided to join the trip, signifying that they feel that the prospects of arrivals to India from Southeast Asia are bright. Interestingly, two senior officers of the IRCTC– which operates the Buddhist train, Mahaparinirvan Express on the Buddhist circuit, as part of the ministerial team.Even during the ASEAN Tourism Forum in Cambodia earlier this year, Indian agents had found good prospects of two-way traffic between India and Cambodia and other countries of the region. The team is visiting Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, in Cambodia, highlighting the prospects of Hindu-Buddhist heritage being used to promote tourism. Sahay will also go to Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam, where the economy is doing well and tourism – both inbound and outbound – is booming. The Minister will also be going to the United States but that is later – from 30 May to 8 June, again accompanied by industry leaders and officials.
