Indian domestic air travel slumps in Q1

The number of domestic passengers carriedby scheduled airlines in Indiafell by 12.2% in the first quarter on 2009, according to a Centre for AsiaPacific Aviation report. A total of 9.82 million passengers made trips within India duringthe three-month period; down from 11.19 million in the first quarter of 2008.
Kingfisher Airlines proved the most popular domesticcarrier during the period, carrying 2.67 million passengers, or 27.2% of thetotal market. Kingfisher’s good performance however, contrasted with that ofJet Airways, which saw its passenger numbers slump 31.1% year-on-year to 1.75million, or 17.9% of total market.
Air Indiawas the third most popular carrier, with 1.67 million passengers (17.0%),followed by IndiGo with 1.32 million passengers (13.5%), SpiceJet (1.19million, 12.1%), JetLite (722,000, 7.4%), GoAir (259,000, 2.6%) and Paramount (201,000, 2.0%)
In terms of load factor however,premium carrier Paramountwas the best performer for the month of March. The Chennai-based airline filled81.9% of its available seats during the period. IndiGo recorded a load factorof 70.0%, leaving the larger carrier trailing behind. Kingfisher recorded aload factor of 60.9%, Jet Airways 60.6% and Air India 57.0%.
