Home-grown hotel companies are looking beyond the Indian shores even as some of the world’s best known hoteliers make a beeline for India. According to an Economic Times report quoting experts, Indian companies were looking for stand-alone properties in the US and Europe, which are up for grabs following losses they made during the global slowdown, and also to use them tap into the growing breed of Indian travellers. The report quoted companies like Taj Hotels and EIH (Oberoi Group ) as always been at the forefront of international expansion, but other Indian players, including some new players, like Bird Group, Claridges Hotels, Sarovar Hotels, Zuri Group and Royal Orchid Hotels have also been looking at overseas opportunities now. Ankur Bhatia’s Bird Group recently acquired Royal Park Hotel in London. “This was a good investment opportunity in London which is an evergreen market and will also host the Olympics in 2012,” he was quoted saying. The company is building six hotels in collaboration with the Thailand-based Dusit Thani in India. “We are already looking at other markets like Greece and Southeast Asian countries for acquisitions,” Bhatia was quoted saying. Subrato Roy’s Sahara India earlier this year acquired the iconic hotel Grosvenor House in London as part of the group’s expansion into the hospitality business. Both Bird and Sahara are new players in the hospitality business. For relatively established hotel firms such as Sarovar Hotels and Zuri Group, East Africa has emerged as an interesting business opportunity. “Africa is a key market where a lot of Indian companies are expanding and we are looking to cater to this growing demand,” Ajay Bakaya, Executive Director at Sarovar Hotels was reported saying. The company is already operating two hotels in Dar es Salaam and Nairobi and hopes to expand into the Middle East. While Sarovar Hotels is primarily looking at management contracts, Bangalore-based Zuri Hotels & Resorts, which the report said was backed by investors from Middle East, has been looking at constructing hotels in the region.
