Passenger baggage handling at several Indian airports may undergo a major change if a proposal under consideration is agreed, Anil Mathur reports.
Under the new plan, which includes Delhi, Hyderabad, Chennai and Bengaluru airports, global tenders will be floated to award the handling contract to a single company which has five years experience in the field. Sources say that the move is to curb congestion at airports, where, at present, handling work is outsourced by the private airlines to sub-contractors. The new scheme is expected to be in place by early 2009.
