India’s Crafts Mela gets presidential approval

Indian President, Pratibha Patil. Yesterday inaugurated the famed Surajkund Crafts Mela, in Haryana, on the outskirts of New Delhi.
Anil mathur reports from India that the Mela, now in its 23rd year, is fast developing an international reputation. This year Egypt and Thailand are also taking part in the 15-day event, which provides hundreds of craftsmen an opportunity to sell directly to thousands of tourists. Over 400 artists, most of them award-winning, have been invited to this year’s Mela.
The annual event, which takes place from 1-15 February has become a major draw for its culture, cuisine and handicraft attractions.
