Indian low cost carrier, IndiGo, has signed a huge deal with Airbus for 180 Airbus A320 aircraft.
The order, which includes 30 standard A320s and 150 ‘neo’ option planes, is the largest single firm order number for large jets in commercial aviation history, and is worth approximately US$14.7 billion at list prices.
The planes are expected to be delivered between 2016 and 2025. Engine selection will be announced by the airline at a later date.
IndiGo will become a launch customer for the A320neo, which will enter the market from 2016. The new narrow-body model will incorporate more fuel-efficient engines and large ‘Sharklet’ wing tip devices. The plane is designed to achieve fuel savings of up to 15%, or up to up to 3,600 tonnes of CO2 per aircraft per year. In addition, the A320neo will provide a double-digit reduction in NOx emissions and reduced engine noise.
“This order of 180 aircraft reaffirms IndiGo’s commitment to the long-term future of aviation in India,” said Aditya Ghosh, President of IndiGo. “The additional aircraft will enable us to take our low fares and courteous, hassle-free service to more customers and destinations and will create more job opportunities.
