Budhi M Suyitno, Air Transportation Director General of the Transportation Ministry, said this quoting data from the Aviation Safety Network.
“Indonesia follows Congo, Sudan, Nigeria, Russia and Iran,” he was quoting saying by Antara news agency.
The data from the Aviation Safety Network showed Indonesia had seven fatal air accidents killing a number of passengers between 2002 and 2006, including the accidents of Adam Air on January 1, 2007, and Garuda Indonesia on March 7, 2007.
Budhi said it was therefore understandable that Indonesia is now under the spotlight of the international community.
However, he added that fatal air accidents not only occurred in the developing countries, but in developed countries as well, like Russia and the United States, which ranked tenth in the worst flight safety records.
He disclosed that Transportation Ministry has proposed a draft law on aviation in Indonesia, adding that it was up to the House of Representatives when to discuss it.
