A Bisnis.com report said Indonesia won’t be able to hit its target of 7 million foreign tourists this year nor the US$6.7 billion in foreign exchange from them.
Bali Update (www.balidiscovery.com), quoting the report, said the likely nationwide arrivals were likely to be closer to 6.4 million. Quoting Noviendi Makalam, the Secretary of the Directorate General of Marketing at the Department of Culture and Tourism, the report said the government was currently considering extending “Visit Indonesia Year” throughout 2009. It also wanted to focus its marketing efforts on 13 key markets.
Noviendi had admitted to Bisnis.com that the proclaimed target was likely to slip with only 4,069,474 tourists coming to Indonesia through the end of August 2008. He suggested Indonesia would end 2008 with 6.4 million tourists, a 16.4% increase over the 5.5 million visitors achieved in 2007.
Despite a promising first three quarters of the year, with the holiday island of Bali in particular experiencing his demand, recent security concerns and the on-going global economic crisis are expected to put the brakes on tourist arrivals for the remainder of the year.
