Indonesia’s Forestry Ministry will rehabilitate 500,000 hectares of forest in 2010, Xinhua reported, citing the Kompas Daily. The project is a continuation of the programme which saw 60,000 hectares of forest revived in 2009. One area involved in the scheme is the Mount Merapi National Park in Central Java, where deforestation has potentially devastating consequences for surrounding towns and villages.
“With damaged forest due to sand mining, now there’s no area that could resist from lava and volcanic material flood if the Merapi Mountain erupts,” Central Java’s Governor Bibit Waluyo, was quoted saying.
