The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has announced the global air traffic results for April, which showed 16.5% growth compared to April 2010. While this is exaggerated by the comparison to the ash-cloud hit April last year, international travel markets in April 2011 also reached a level 7% higher than the pre-recession peak of early 2008. The rise in demand was more than matched by a 16.8% increase in capacity however, leading to a slight drop in load factors, which averaged 76.7%. “Demand improved significantly in April. Eliminating all distortions, we are growing at 3-4%,” said Giovanni Bisignani, director general and CEO of IATA. “International traffic is now 7% above the early 2008 pre-recession levels and business confidence is high. Unfortunately two things are spoiling the party – demand shocks and high jet fuel prices.”
