Giant Internet agency Expedia, for example, lists boutique hotels such as The Classic Villa in Christchurch, which has just 12 rooms. Industry experts say it is the internet that has helped drive the trend towards boutique hotels, which seldom have much of a marketing budget.
Now the electronic version of word-of-mouth has become a major source of business. Many are also signing up to marketing brands that do have the budget for international promotion as they can also provide a centralized booking system according to the Sunday Telegraph.
“Everyone and their dog calls themselves a luxury hotel these days. The Internet is great, but it doesn’t always tell the truth. Branding sets standards,” Richard Rosebery, founder of Select Hotels & Resorts International was quoted as saying in the news report. Setting standards, without being rigid is what is claimed to be giving boutique hotels the edge over international hotel chains.
