ITB Asia 2014 to be carbon-neutral event

Marina Bay Sands and Messe Berlin are planning to make this year’s ITB Asia a carbon-neutral event.
The travel trade show will take place at the Sands Expo & Convention Centre this week, and for the first time in the event’s seven-year history organisers are planning to offset the show’s entire carbon footprint. This will be achieved by investing in two regional projects: Sungai Kerling Hydropower in Malaysia and Wayang Windu Geothermal in Indonesia.
In addition, the event is planning reduce its overall carbon footprint by 5% compared to 2012 levels. This will be achieved through a range of measures, including new in-room motion sensors to maximise lighting efficiency in the meeting rooms, and keeping room temperatures at a steady 24⁰C.
Finally, all unused booth giveaways and stationery will be collected at the end of the show and donated to charity ‘Food from the Heart’. Leftover brochures will be collected and recycled.
“ITB Asia and all that it entails can have a tremendous impact on the environment. With a little mindfulness, we can all take measures to reduce the show’s ecological footprint and I urge all exhibitors to join us and roll on the green revolution,” said Nino Gruettke, executive director of ITB Asia.
Since opening in 2010, Marina Bay Sands has received multiple awards for its environmental work. It has achieved EarthCheck Silver Certification and the Sands Expo became the first MICE facility in Southeast Asia to obtain Sustainable Events Management System certification.
