Japan will target a 25% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2020 from 1990 levels, the country’s new Prime Minister, Yukio Hatoyama, has pledged. According to a Japan Times report, Hatoyama’s target is more ambitious than the 8% commitment made by former PM, Taro Aso. Hatoyama also urged other major countries to agree on “ambitious” reduction targets, saying such an accord will be a precondition for Japan’s emissions cuts.
