Scientists now say that the devastating earthquake that hit Japan on Friday measured 9.0 on the Richter scale. The quake was previously registered as measuring 8.9, but the US Geological Survey (USGS) has said the upgrade occurred after more data became available. According to USGS records, Friday’s quake becomes only the fourth 9+ earthquake ever recorded, and the first since the 9.1-magnitude quake which caused the 2004 tsunami. The strongest quake ever recorded was in Chile in 1960, which registered 9.5 on the Richter scale.
