Japanese arrivals drop 18.7% in 2009

The number of international arrivals to Japan last year slumped 18.7% to 6.79 million, figures release by the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) have revealed. It was the first double-digit decline since 1986 and was caused by the a combination of the global economic crisis and the strength of the yen against the South Korean won, which hit arrivals from Japan’s largest source market.
