Japanese hotels cold to foreigners

The majority of Japanese hotels and guesthouses that didn’t have a single foreign guest last year, according to a government survey, and many don’t want any in the future. CNN has reported the survey, conducted by Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs, showing that 72% of hospitality establishments in the country didn’t have foreign customers in the past year. Such businesses often claimed they are unable to support foreign languages and that their facilities are not suited to foreigners.
The results come in the wake of Japan’s Tourism Minister, Nariaki Nakayama, saying that Japanese do not like foreigners. He later apologised for his comments. However it raises a problem for Japan, which has spent about US$35 million per year on its ‘Visit Japan’ campaign, and aims to attract 10 million foreigners to the country by 2010.
