Uttar Pradesh has reported a steep decline in tourist arrivals following the slew of recent disasters in Japan. Prior to the earthquake a fortnight ago, Buddhists sites like Sarnath, Shrawasti, Kushinagar, Kaushambi and Bodh Gaya in the northern state had reported a record number of international visitors. However as Japanese outbound tourism collapses, a drop in arrivals has quickly become apparent. Speaking to UNI, a hotelier in Varanasi said that Japanese tourists were an important source market there and that since the earthquake they have been cancelling on a daily basis.
