Travel to Japan has continued to slowly recover in the last few months, according to tour operator InsideJapan. The Japan specialist has revealed that 45% of trips were cancelled following the earthquake and tsunami on 11 March and bookings throughout July and August were respectively 40% and 30% lower than the months last year. However, departures in September are currently at 97% compared to 2010’s levels and many companies expect to see a return to normal booking patterns by November. “There is still some work to do for the usually peak autumn months,” said InsideJapan in a statement. “Tourism is gradually picking up in Japan, although it is still a way behind levels of 2010 which is one reason people should take advantage and go now. There are less foreign visitors right now, rendering once busy tourist sites comparatively empty, but cultural experiences richer and the welcome even warmer than usual”. Lindsey Ueberroth, president of Preferred Hotels Group also said that sales to Japan had struggled since the disaster. “Corporate travel is back but we still need to educate the leisure market,” she told Travel Daily earlier this week. “A lot of it is about public perception”.
