Tour operator Jet2.com has suspended its flights and holidays to the popular tourist destinations of Sharm el Sheikh and Hurghada, in response to continued unrest throughout Egypt. Despite the Red Sea resorts remaining safe and cut off from the violent scenes and demonstrations in Cairo and Alexandria, the company has made the decision to cancel all its planned departures from 1 March. Jet2.com will instead add its 70,000 additional seats to holidays in Spain and Portugal. “Due to the ongoing state of civil and political unrest in Egypt, Jet2.com and Jet2holidays have suspended flight services and holidays to Sharm el Sheikh and Hurghada from 1 March 2011,” read a company statement. “Whilst the Red Sea resorts are not currently affected, the safety and comfort of our customers is our number one priority, and as such we do not want them to face the stressful uncertainty of whether their holiday will go ahead as planned. Jet2.com and Jet2holidays are contacting all affected passengers booked to travel to Egypt, feedback from customers is that they are relieved by our decision.” Meanwhile, creating 4,000 extra seats per week across the airline’s bases, Jet2.com has responded to the decision to suspend services to Egypt by an increasing capacity to Spain and Portugal. Philip Meeson, boss of Jet2.com, added: “Manchester, Leeds, Newcastle and Glasgow will see the largest growth in capacity as the airline responds to demand in the North with more flights going on sale immediately.”
