Jetstar will launch an international hub at Darwin, news.com.au has reported. The deal between the airline and the Northern Territory will establish an international hub in Darwin, says Northern Territory government is expected to provide a huge boost to the region, opening Darwin to an additional 250,000 annual tourists. The news is especially welcome for the airport in the light of Tiger Airways recent announcement that it will suspend services from the Northern Australian airport from late October.
Under the agreement Jetstar will base seven planes in Darwin to be used for the broadening of services to South East Asia, including the new Ho Chi Minh City route which launches on 1 September.
Northern Territory Chief Minister Paul Henderson said that the government would also be investing heavily in the deal; “The Territory government will provide AU$5 million (US$4.6 million) to support the establishment of the hub and AU$3 million to support marketing of routes and destinations,” Henderson told reporters.
The new deal is expected boost the Northern Territory economy by AU$160 million (US$149 million), creating more than 570 jobs.
