What’s your favourite destination?
I’ve travelled extensively around the world both personally and in my career. But my favourite place has to be Maui in the Hawaiian islands as for me it represents paradise; it has stunning beaches, the palm trees and it’s just idyllic.
Is there anywhere that you would still like to visit?
I have travelled to many places but there are some countries I’ve not had the chance to visit yet. Cambodia and Vietnam are on the top of my list as the feedback from my friends is that these countries are amazing, so those are definitely on my to-do list.
What’s your favourite memory in your career?
There are so many great memories from my time in travel and I never thought I would have the career I have done. Working with the people that I have and them also working with me to help them develop their career has been a real highlight for me.
What’s your proudest achievement?
There have been a number of landmark achievements in my time at Thomas Cook and Thomson, as well as my time as chairman of ABTA for four years. However my proudest moment has to be when I was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2010 as it’s a select group of people and to be a peer amongst them is an honour. I never believed I would be in that group and am thrilled to have the accolade as it is nominated and voted by senior members of the industry.
Do you have any travel predictions or tips?
People will continue to travel and seek new adventures and experiences, such as space travel. I would definitely love to do that one day, but only when the price goes down!
Anything final travel career thoughts?
I started as a trainee at Thomas Cook in Liverpool and then as I moved up in my career I found that if people are willing to learn they can really achieve anything in this industry. It’s very pleasing to be able to work with people and see them climb up to more senior roles. They don’t need a degree to do it, just to a willingness to learn. I get great satisfaction in seeing people develop and move up through the ranks.
