Karnataka can almost double its domestic tourist arrivals from the 33 million visitors it welcomed in 2009 to 62 million in five years time, as well as attracting more than 700,000 foreign arrivals, according to a development study by FICCI-Yes Bank.
The road map in the study that the state government energises local entrepreneurs to take up tourism projects, thus creating more employment opportunities and providing investment in small and medium tourism enterprises. Use of information technology and e-commerce should take centre stage, and the public-private partnership (PPP) model should be adapted for micro sector projects so that small enterprises in the rural landscape benefit from the growth. Another suggestion is that ecotourism projects should be developed, and regulation within a government certification system. The framework should incentivise use of eco-friendly methods by the industry. forts should also be made to prolong the stay of the tourists in the state, as well as luring tourists visiting Goa to combine their stay with a trip to Karnataka, the report stated.
