KLM Royal Dutch Airlines has fought back against claims that the European Commission had reprimanded the company. Recent reports have stated that the EC issued a warning to the carrier after it refused to instate all ash cloud compensation. However despite the media attention KLM, and other carriers in the Association of European Airlines (AEA), continue to argue that passenger rights were not covered in these ‘extreme circumstances’. “The compensation regulations were intended for individual flight delays and cancellations and not for circumstances in which the entire airspace was closed for a lengthy period due to natural disaster,” said KLM in a statement. “KLM wanted to operate at the time, but was not allowed to. In that light, it would be unreasonable to expect the airline to carry all of the costs, argued the KLM management”.
