The Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation (KMRC) has commissioned a study about the possible extension of the East-West Metro to the airport, The Times of India has reported. Plans are underway to increase Kolkata airport’s annual passenger handling capacity to 20 million, with the number of daily cars and taxis at the airport expected to jump to 24,000 after modernisation. It is hoped that a metro link would alleviate the pressure of this surge.
“The 6.5km track would cost us around INR800 crore (US$160 million) extra,” The Times quoted a KMRC official as saying. “The airport track will benefit a lot of fliers, especially those who are booked on no-frills airlines.”
