The Lao National Institute of Tourism & Hospitality (LANITH) and New Zealand’s Pacific International Hotel Management School (PIHMS) have entered into an agreement in which PIHMS will share its teaching best practices with the Asian country.
Located in New Plymouth on the North Island of New Zealand, PIHMS has been operational since 1995 and offers diplomas, degrees and postgraduate level programmes in a variety of hospitality and tourism subjects.
The PIHMS-LANITH deal will now see PIHMS provide a three-month ‘train-the-trainer’ programme at its campus in New Plymouth for select LANITH team members; subject content in support of LANITH’s educational curriculum development process; and PIHMS accreditation of a select number of LANITH graduates to further their studies at the bachelor degree level.
“PIHMS is delighted to have the opportunity to share our established best practices in sector education and training with Lanith”, said Dr Flora Gilkison, Principal of PIHMS. “The country is an emerging tourism destination and many of the lessons that we have learned here at PIHMS and in New Zealand are applicable to Laos’ tourism future”, she added.
“This partnership with PIHMS allows us to accelerate the development of the curricula for our four two-year diploma programmes and enables us to spend more time on translation and contextualisation,” said Peter Semone, Chief Technical Adviser of Project LAO/020.
LANITH will offer diplomas in several areas of hospitality and tourism, including Food & Beverage Production, Food & Beverage Operations, Accommodation Operations and Travel & Tourism Operations. Initially, all instruction will be conducted in the Lao language.
