Laos to build new international airport

The new facility would replace the current Wattay International Airport, which is limitedin terms of size and facilities.
“We studied all the options and concluded that Wattaycannot cater adequately to the long term economic growth of Vientiane,”vice-head of Laos’ CivilAviation Department, Vanpheng Chanthaphone, was quoted by the Laos news agency (KPL) as saying.He added the new hub would give a good image of Laos aviation.
Recently, the Laosgovernment gave the green light for South Korea’s Booyong Company toconduct a feasibility study to build a new airport.
The new airport will be located in the Xaythany district of Vientiane, near thenew international stadium which will host the SEA Games in 2009.
The Civil Aviation Department also said that a land area of 5,000 hectares hasbeen set aside for the new airport and the feasibility study is expected to becompleted by 2010. If approved, Booyong will begin construction work in 2011,with completion scheduled for 2015, the report added.
