Captain C.P. Krishnan Nair, Chairman of The Leela Palaces, Hotels & Resorts, has been awarded the Bharat Ratna Rajiv Ghandi Environment Award in recognition of his work in the protection of the environment.
The award was given to Captain Nair on World Environment Day (5 June) by Honourable Shri. Ashokrao Chavan, Chief Minister of Maharashtra, at the Environment Cell of Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee.
Addressing the gathering, Chavan stressed that all companies, industries, local councils and corporations must raise their consciousness on the environment and actively participate in cleaning up the state of Maharashtra, and praised Leela for implementing green initiatives.
Captain Nair has always had a passion for the environment. He has worked throughout his career to fulfil his dream of creating valleys of lush green wherever he has built a hotel, and personally supervises the landscaping and plantation of exotic and rare plants in Leela hotels’ gardens. He has also liaised with civic organisations such as The International Airports Authority of India and the Mumbai Municipal Corporation, to improve the condition of public areas such as Sahar and Santa Cruz.
Captain Nair himself is very unassuming of his achievements in Mumbai, commenting: “The gardens belong to the citizens of Mumbai now. I only planted them; they are the owners and the ones who should enjoy them.”
