The Leela Group of Hotels has received a threatening emails saying that explosive devices have been planted in all its hotels across India, and will be detonated if a ransom of INR4.2 million (US$86,000) is not paid, The Times of India has reported.
Police said the email was sent to Leela hotels in Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kerala, and Goa. A bomb detection unit was reportedly sent to check Leela’s Mumbai property, and did not recover any explosive devices. Vivek Nair, Vice Chairman and Managing Director of Leela Group, said he believed the emails to be a hoax. The emails were reportedly sent from a Gmail address traced to Kenya.
“We have received similar email messages in several of our hotels. The sender mentioned bombs kept in the hotels. On police instructions, we tried to reply, but the mail bounced. The email did not mention any name. We think it’s a hoax,” The Times reported Nair as saying. Police also said believe that the mail may be a prank, given recent events said they are not taking it lightly.
The threat to Leela’s hotels comes a month and a half after the devastating terror attacks on the Taj and Trident Oberoi hotels in Mumbai.
