For the first time in China, golfers will have an opportunity to step back in time, to the early days of the game in a nostalgic event co-sponsored by The Leading Hotels of the World (LHW) at the Shanghai Sheshan International Golf Club on 1 April 2011.
In what will be titled the ‘Sheshan Members Historic Scottish Golf Society 9-hole Golf Friendship Challenge’, 50 club members and guests will be the first in China to play with vintage 100-150 year old Scottish golf clubs dating back to the era of such legendary champions as Harry Vardon, James Braid, JH Taylor, Walter Hagen and Bobby Jones.
Before teeing-off, participants will be taken on an historic journey discovering the evolution of the game which dates back more than 400 years. They will learn about the development of original ‘feathery’ golf balls, hickory clubs, rules and playing styles, before a chance to practice with the historic clubs.
For the 9-hole challenge, representatives of the Historic Scottish Golf Society will be dressed in the traditional golfing attire of Plus Fours and Flat Caps – with players encouraged to similarly get into the spirit of the event.
LHW is sponsoring the Historic Scottish Golf Society and Shanghai Sheshan International Golf Club, and will also be offering the winners ‘Leading Golf Stay & Play Packages’ at top golf destinations in Scotland, Thailand, Malaysia, South Africa and Switzerland.
Following the game, players are additionally invited to a whisky tasting & blending event hosted by Whisky China at the ’19th hole’ to create their own deluxe blended Scotch Whisky to take home as a souvenir.
Visiting China for the first time, The Historic Scottish Golf Society was founded to provide golfers with the opportunity to play with antique golf clubs and learn about the history of golf. Famous Honorary Members include Britain’s Duke of York, the First Minister of Scotland, Alex Salmond, and golf legends Sam Torrance, Neil Coles and Bernard Gallagher.
Shanghai Sheshan International Golf Club (SGC) is Shanghai’s first private golf club. Opened in 2004, it is the venue for the annual HSBC World Champions event on the Asian Tour, the only ‘winners only’ tournament in Asia.
