The General Administration of Civil Aviation of China has submitted a proposal on the site for the planned second Beijing international airport and is waiting for approval, South China Morning Post quoted Xinhua as saying.
“The preliminary site is to the south of the city and near the Yongding River,” Xinhua quoted a CAAC official as saying.
“Beijing has reserved Lixian town in Daxing district as a candidate site,” the district’s party secretary Shen Baochang was quoted as saying. “Lixian town is in the jurisdiction of the capital with easy access to expressways leading to downtown Beijing. It is ideal for a large international airport.
The city is spending 27 billion yuan (US$3.6 billion) on its Beijing Capital International Airport expansion to cope with booming passenger numbers and an influx of tourists expected for next year’s Olympics, SCMP said.
The new runway can accommodate the new Airbus A380, 100 new aprons, a cargo zone, and a terminal building to be ready by February. The enhanced airport will be able to handle 60 million passengers and 1.8 million tonnes of cargo each year.
According to Beijing’s 11th Five-Year Programme (2006-2010), construction of the second airport will begin by 2010.
