airBaltic has cancelled schedules from London and Dublin to Vilnius in Lithuania after low cost carriers muscled in the market. The Latvian airline has blamed overcapacity and overlapping of routes behind its decision, which will see four routes dropped later this month. “Coincidentally, both Ryanair and Wizzair have announced new routes in Vilnius that overlap with those served by airBaltic. The world is big enough, and we rather walk away from the crowd, to avoid the other two airlines flying wing-to-wing with each other,” said Tadas Vizgirda, general manager of airBaltic. “The new Vilnius airport discount scheme appears to have backfired, resulting in overcapacity on just a handful of routes rather than broadening the choice of routes, as intended by the scheme.” The Vilnius to Dublin, London, Rome and Paris routes have been cancelled.
