Lufthansa has announced that it will increase its available seat capacity by 11.3% in summer 2011, compared to last year’s summer season. This increase is largely attributable to the European carrier’s fleet renewal programme, which involves replacing old aircraft with larger, more fuel-efficient models. Lufthansa expects to have eight Airbus A380s in service by the end of the summer timetable, replacing its existing Boeing 747-400s. This summer, the airline will fly the A380 to five destinations: Johannesburg, New York, Beijing, San Francisco and Tokyo. A sixth destination, which has yet to be announced, will be included added to the A380 schedule by mid-2011. The airline’s superjumbo has 196 more seats than the B747. The airline will also boost frequencies on several European routes, including services to Moscow, Manchester, Budapest, Vienna and Geneva.
