Lufthansa has strengthened its environmental credentials with its “One Tree per Passenger” scheme. The initiative promises to plant one tree in the Kulun Qi province in Inner Mongolia, for every passenger who travelled on the Beijing to Frankfurt route in September. The scheme was launched to celebrate the opening of the route and adds to other environmental programmes including the use of biofuels on commercial flights in Europe. The carrier is contributing to the “Million Tree Project”, organised by the Shanghai Roots & Shoots Foundation, which intends to plant one million trees by 2015. The foundation aims to promote reforestation in Kulun Qi, which suffers severely from desertification and its consequential sandstorms, and to reduce emissions in China.
