About 4,500 Lufthansa employees went on strike on Tuesday, Bloomberg has reported. The action, which lasted several hours, was linked to a pay dispute and resulted in the cancellation of 44 domestic German services and the disruption of many others. The strikes spread across Germany, with Frankfurt, Munich, Cologne and Stuttgart all affected. Airport workers’ labour union Ver.di is seeking a 9.8% pay rise for Lufthansa’s estimated 60,000 ground and cabin personnel. The airline has offered 5.5%. “Participation in the warning strikes is far better than we had expected,” said Gerhard Straube, a representative of Ver.di. Talks between airline and union officials are scheduled to resume today.
