Spanish airport operator Aena has bought out London Luton Airport for GBP394.2 million from Abertis.
Luton will be Aena’s sixth largest airport behind the likes of Gran Canaria and Alicante.
The London airport’s links to Spain played a part in Aena’s interests as well as the appeal of owning more major gateways. In a statement on its website the operator said Luton has “a high growth potential”.
Aena previously had involvement in Luton with a 10% stake in the TBI Group, with the other 90% owned by Abertis.
A statement from Aena read: “The transaction is subject to approval by the authorities of the European Commission on Competition, the Municipal Council of Luton and Council of Ministers of the Government of Spain. This acquisition is part of the strategy to increase Aena’s international presence with controlling stakes in strategic airports and minority status investments in foreign holdings.”
The sale of Luton marks part of Abertis’ exit from the airport business after previously selling off Cardiff and Belfast International airports.
Luton handles around 10 million passengers a year and celebrated its 75th anniversary this year. Low-cost carrier easyJet had its headquarters at the airport.
