Macau MICE sector sees 9% drop

Macau hosted 347 MICE events in the second quarter of 2009 - 9% fewer than the previous quarter, Xinhua reported figures from the city’s Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) as showing. Of the Q2 MICE events, 328 were meetings/conferences while 19 were exhibitions. The total number of attendees decreased by 63% quarter-on-quarter to 57,423, the DSEC figures indicated.
The average duration of the MICE events fell from 2.2 days in the previous quarter to 1.8 days in Q2. For exhibitions the average duration was 3.4 days, while the median for meetings/conferences 1.8 days. 60 of the events were tourism/culture-related - the second highest industry sector, behind commerce/trade.
In the first half of 2009, a total of 730 MICE events were held in Macau, with an average duration of two days, attracting some 211,287 attendees, the DSEC said.
