A group of regional airports across the UK has called on the government to scrap its ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach to aviation taxes in its consultation response to APD. The airport group, which includes Birmingham Airport, Durham Tees Valley Airport, Liverpool John Lennon and the Manchester Airport Group , has argued that an APD increase would affect other airports more than Heathrow and Gatwick. This would make it more difficult for regional airports to commence new services, and therefore impact the local economy and employment. In a letter to the Chancellor, the group also asked the government to consider charging passengers a premium for travelling from congested London airports such as Gatwick and Heathrow. “If the Government is committed to constraining the growth of the congested London airports and prefers to see regional airports take up this capacity, then the proposal put forward by a number of regional airports including Liverpool, to replace APD with a charge on the busiest airports need to be seriously considered,” said Craig Richmond, CEO of Peel Airports.
