The mayor of Makkah, Dr. Osama Fadl al Bar has denied that hotel rates have been pushed up for the Ramadan period, the Gulf News has reported. Occupancy in hotels in the Saudi Arabian holy city have reportedly declined by about 30% this Ramadan, but the mayor said there was no truth in press reports that high hotel rates are behind the slump.
Dr Al Bar told reporters that reduced occupancy in hotels was mainly due to the fact that Umrah pilgrims have mostly opted to stay in residential buildings and apartments, rather than hotels.
