Malaysian Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen wants to bring in more tourists from China and Japan The New Straits Times reports.
“These countries are in our top five markets and, from my recent visit there, we have learned how we can package tourism programmes to meet their specific needs,” she said recently.
Some 81,000 Chinese tourists visited Malaysia in the first four months of last year and the number increased to 86,000 during the same period this year.
“We are also looking to boost arrivals from secondary Chinese markets such as Chengdu, Xian and Shenyang,” she said.
However, there was an 8% drop in Japanese tourists from January to April this year compared to the same period last year. The number fell from 30,000 to 28,000.
“We will be targeting certain groups like retirees, career women and young male executives. We will develop niche programmes to suit their interests such as cultural visits, shopping, golf and diving,” she said.
