With half its tourist arrivals coming for Singapore, Malaysia intends to push this figure even as it tries to buffer against the global tourism slump by boosting domestic travel.
A TODAY newspaper report quoted the country’s Tourism Minister, Azalina Othman Said, as saying that Singaporeans and Malaysians were “almost the same”, hence Singaporeans were very much part of her government’s ongoing campaign to get Malaysians to travel within their country. She was in Singapore last week to launch a campaign.
Azalina was quoted saying that tourism arrivals could possibly fall short of the 22.5 million target by some 500,000. For the coming year Malaysia expects to draw 20 million visitors.
The Minister was quoted saying that both countries were also discussing improving rail connections between Singapore and the southern Malaysian state of Johor.
The train service from Singapore now runs directly to Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Bangkok.
