The tourism industry West Bengal is suffering as Maoist activities in the area intensify. Bankura district is somewhat of a flashpoint at the moment as regular security alerts are resulting in shutdowns in the district. These ‘shutdowns’, as described by Bankura District magistrate, Mohammad Ghulam Ali Ansari, are deterring international and domestic visitors from travelling to the area. However tourism professionals in the district told ANI that security issues have been hyperbolised by the media which is propagating fear of the Maoists, thus keeping people away and hurting local businesses.
