Singapore Airlines (SIA) and Malaysia Airlines (MAS) are not slashing their fares for flights between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur with the opening up of the route to budget carriers, a report said.
The Straits Times report said though the lucrative route was partially opened to Tiger Airways, Jetstar Asia and AirAsia, the two national carriers were not under pressure to make drastic cuts.
The report quoting Tiger Airways and Jetstar Asia said travellers’ habits had not changed significantly with their flights, on average, just over half-full.
SIA chief executive officer Chew Choon Seng and MAS managing director Idris Jala were quoted saying that the competition had not made an appreciable dent in business.
”Things are not as bad as we had thought,” Idris was quoted telling reporters on the sidelines of the inaugural Singapore Airshow Aviation Leadership Summit.
Tiger president and CEO Tony Davis was quoted saying that old travel habits were hard to break.
”It will take some time to change the traditional booking patterns on that route, where people have been used to turning up at the airport and just seeing what is available,”.
