Mauritius saw a 17.7% decline in gross tourism receipts in the first half of 2009 as the global economic slump discouraged visitors, Reuters reported official data as showing. The government’s Central Statistics Office (CSO) said tourist arrivals to the Indian Ocean island tumbled 9.3% to 413,504, compared with the same period last year.
Tourism revenue for the whole year is forecast to be around MUR38.2 billion (US$1.24 billion) – 7.3% down on the MUR41.2 billion generated in 2008.
