Advantage chief executive John McEwan has retained his role as chairman at ABTA. “I am delighted to be confirmed as ABTA Chairman for a second term. There are many important industry issues that the Association is tackling right now on behalf of Members, and I am pleased to have the opportunity to continue to work as part of the ABTA team in influencing them,” said McEwan on the appointment. The news comes as the association pushes its APD reform ahead of the review next month. The debate gathered pace yesterday at the House of Lords, where Liberal Democrat peer Broness Floella Benjamin called for reform in APD, particularly for the Caribbean banding. “I raised the debate on the impact of Air Passenger Duty because I wanted to focus people’s mind on the human story behind tourism and the unintended impact that aviation taxes like Air Passenger Duty can have on development,” said Baroness Benjamin. “Tourism provides a vital lifeline to developing countries all over the world in terms of jobs, GDP and investment, so a threat to tourism is a threat to the people in those countries that depend on tourism.”
