The hunt for flight MH370 will be suspended upon completion of the existing search area, it has been confirmed.
A joint statement was released on Friday (22 July 2016) following a meeting between the transport ministers of Malaysia, Australia and China, which confirmed that the search will not be widened from the current 120,000km² swathe of Indian Ocean.
“The ministers agreed that should the aircraft not be located in the current search area, and in the absence of credible new evidence leading to the identification of a specific location of the aircraft, the search will not end, but suspended upon completion of the 120,000km² search area,” the statement read.
The ministers added however, that the suspension “does not mean the termination of the search”. Instead, it will continue if and when new information about the missing plane’s whereabouts comes to light.
The Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 disappeared with 239 people onboard while flying from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing on 8 March 2014.
