Available room (RevPAR) for Middle East hotels dropped in the first quarter, but hoteliers in the region continue to perform better than those in other parts of the world, says Gulfnews.
In a first-quarter hotel sector report, business advisory firm Deloitte said RevPAR in the Middle East dropped by 12.9 per cent to US$142, dragged down by a 9% fall in occupancy levels.
Deloitte, however, pointed out that despite the decline the Middle East continues to be the best performing region, with Abu Dhabi achieving the highest occupancy, average room rates and RevPAR among Arab cities.
“It is clear that the economic situation has deteriorated and consumer and business spending is in sharp decline, with less spend available for travel”, said a Deloitte’s spokesman.
As a result, tourism’s contribution to gross domestic product is expected to contract by 3.6% this year according to the World Travel and Tourism Council.
