More air links to Penang

The New StraitsTimes, quoting Transport Minister Chan Kong Choy, said his ministry wasdiscussing with several airline companies, including Malaysia Airlines (MAS),Firefly (a subsidiary of MAS), AirAsia and AirAsia X (a long-haul carrier).
He said theseproposed air links were important to attract more tourism and investment. His statement comes on the heels of the recently announcedNorthern Corridor Economic Region (NCER) – a massive development plan forKedah, Perak, Perlis and Penang.
“We areworking together with these (airline) companies as well as the state government,” he was quoted saying.
“The ministrywants to turn Penang into the regional hub forcivil aviation.” The government also wants both Penang and Langkawi (in Kedah) to take the lead in pushing Malaysia’stourism industry.
Under NCER, a plan that targets to develop thenorthern corridor into a world-class economic region by 2025, Penang andLangkawi will be established as premier tourist destinations.One of the key areas of focus would be medical tourism, tapping onPenang’s expertise and expand this to includeLangkawi, which can provide
complementary medicine, traditional therapies and spa treatments, NST said.
