Despite the economic downturn, more Australians than ever are taking to the seas and are treating themselves to long cruise holidays, according to Princess Cruises. The cruise line said bookings for its annual world cruise from Australia had reached record levels in June, with more than 500 Australians getting in early to secure berths on Dawn Princess’ circumnavigation voyage departing in May 2010.
Jenny Lourey, Senior Vice President of Carnival Australia, which represents Princess Cruises in Australia, said this number was more than double the bookings made in any other month this year. Most of the bookings were for the full 104-night world cruise, with the 52-night line voyages between Sydney and Southampton and longer cruise sectors also selling well.
“It seems Australian travellers are confident the worst of the economic downturn is behind them and are willing to commit to a long holiday, although value is still important,” she said. “Australians have been choosing to cruise in record numbers since 2002, and these bookings show demand for cruise holidays in Australia has not softened.”
