British Airways cabin crew have threatened to hold a 20-day strike this month after the airline sacked a senior steward. Unite is considering four separate five-day strikes should flight attendants vote against BA’s latest peace offer. This latest development has amounted after the airline sacked Duncan Holley, a long-serving cabin crew member and a Unite senior official, who failed to report to duty while carrying out union work. Holley plans to appeal against the sacking. If Unite’s secretaries Tony Woodley and Derek Simpson approve the Unite ballot the earliest cabin crew can strike is 17 May. BA CEO Willie Walsh said this week that Unite’s ability to hurt the carrier had been “significantly restricted” by the airline’s planning. Travel Daily was told BA has further contingency plans in place. A Unite spokesperson has said the strikes are likely to happen.
Meanwhile travelsupermarket.com Flights Expert Peter Smith has warned BA that customers will turn to alternative carriers if the dispute is not settled soon. “BA and Unite must resolve this long running issue once and for all and behind closed doors. There needs to be an end to the customer misery to allow the British travelling public to regain confidence in the airline and to travel without disruption. Having already lost millions during the recent ash disruption, the airline can simply not afford to let this dispute rumble on any longer.”
