China’s fruit industry was rocked recently after hundreds of watermelons mysteriously exploded. Farmers in eastern China’s Jiangsu province were left perplexed and out-of-pocket after hectares of melons blew themselves up. It is suspected that the explosions were caused excessive fertilizer and rain.
Xinhua reported one farmer, Liu Mingsuo as saying that he had sprayed the growth accelerator forchlorfenuron and instant calcium on his melon crop on 6 May. A day later, he said, 180 of the watermelons had exploded. These chemicals, combined with a period of rains following a dry spell, are believed to have caused the explosions.
